9 Days Sarawak Overland
Starting your adventure from Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, you then travel to Bako National Park where there are jungle trails with wooden walkways and steps hewn into the mountains. This is the stuff of classic adventure through the backwaters of Borneo. You will take a boat far up the Lemanak River for a chance to stay in a traditional Iban longhouse . You trek through steaming rainforests and tackle jungle roads, but the sight of the varied wildlife, ancient Niah caves and the incredible coastline will well repay the effort.
Day 1: Arrive Kuching
You will be met on arrival and transfer to Kuching Waterfront Lodge located in the city centre. Rest of the day you are free to explore Kuching on your own.
Day 2: Bako National Park
Today we drive and take a boat to Bako National Park. This Park is made up of primary forest and there is a wide variety of flora and fauna to be seen. Insect eating plants and Umbrella palm can be found and 120 bird species have been recorded including black Hornbills. Animals include proboscis and silver leaf monkey, macaque, monitor lizard and wild boar. There are many mark trails you can follow to search for these animals. Overnight at Park's Lodge. (B/L/D)
Day 3: Iban Longhouses
Today we travel by car and by native longboat along the Lemanak River and visit an Iban Longhouse. Many Longhouses here are set on iron posts and contain several family rooms. The community is ruled by a headman and a council of elders and most Ibans are simple ciltivators of hill rice and pepper vines. In the evening enjoy a jungle feast and native dances. Overnight in the long communual area of the Longhouse. (B/L/D)
Day 4: Iban Longhouses
Today we begin our full day jungle trekking, visiting native farm, waterfalls and having a bamboo picnic lunch by the river where food are mainly cooked in bamboo. Along the trek, we learn about some medicinal plants, edible fruits and leaves and the agricultural activities of the community. (B/L/D)
Day 5: Sibu
Leaving this river community behind, we travel downstream and then drive to Sibu. This busy trading port is situated 60 km upstream on the mighty Rejang River and much of its population originally came from China's Foochow Province. The Port is often full of rushing ships that plough the waterways, mainly trading in timber which is floated down from the highlands. There is a lively market with plenty of fresh seafood. this evening we can walk around the busy night market and see the great 7-storey pagoda before having dinner at one of the local seafood restaurant. Day 6: Niah National Park
After a morning's drive and passing through Bintulu town, we arrive at the Niah National Park. The Niah Caves are perhaps one of the most important archaeological sites in Asia where traces of human habitation and relics dating back as far as perhaps 40,000 years were unearthed. We visit the Niah Museum and walk on a 3 km plank walk through the forest to reach the caves. The caves are also home to countless tiny swifts who build their nests high up the cliff using their own sticky saliva which becomes very hard. These are the source of the famous Chinese delicacy 'birds nest soup'. Overnight at park chalet. (B/L/D)
Day 7: Mulu National Park
This morning we drive to Miri and catch our flight to Mulu. Mulu is famous for its wealth of botanical interest. There are many species of wildlife here including over 100 species of birds and glorious butterflies. Arrive early afternoon, we have time to take a plank walk through the rainforest to explore a couple of the limestone caves such as Deer Cave and Lang Cave. There is a good chance in seeing millions of bats flying out of Deer Cave in the late afternoon. Overnight at Park's Lodge. (B/L/D)
Day 8: Mulu National Park
We have a full day to explore the Park and plan to see Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave. Wind Cave has the most impressive stalactites and stalagmites and Clearwater Cave has one of the longest underground rivers. We are also able to visit the Penan people who live in this region. Once nomadic hunters living on wild sago, they have now settled to grow rice. (B/L/D)
Day 9: Depart Mulu
Today your memorable tour of Sarawak Overland concludes after breakfast with a departure transfer to Mulu Airport for your departure.
