Located only 25 km from Sandakan and set in 43 sq.km of virgin rainforest, the world famous Sepilok Sanctuary enables visitors to come in close contact with the remarkable 'Man of the Forest' and witness an exciting conservation program in action. The sanctuary was begun in 1964 to help once captive orangutans learn to fend for themselves in the wild. Our visit is to coincide with the twice daily feeding time of the orangutans where semi-wild orangutans come down from the tree for their daily ration of milk and banana.
Depart hotel for 30 minutes drive to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and walk for 10 minutes through the rainforest on the wooden plankwalks to witness the feeding of the orangutans. After observing some of the activities of the Orangutans, we proceed to the Chinese Restaurant for lunch and thereafter continue for a short city tour visiting Australian War Memorial and Main Market before returning to the hotel.
